MEDIA ADVISORY

U.S. SENIORS COMMISSION TO TOUR MIAMI HOUSING FACILITY
AND HEAR FROM AARP, LOCAL LEADERS AT FIELD HEARING

The Commission on Affordable Housing and Health Facility Needs for Seniors in the 21st Century - "the Seniors Commission" - will be in South Florida on January 14, 2002, to study the region's housing and health services programs. At 9:15 am, the commission will tour Miami's Robert Sharp Towers, a senior housing facility operated by Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation, and meet with residents, care workers and seniors placed on a housing and services waiting list. At 10:00 am, the commission will convene the fourth in a series of coast-to-coast field hearings to continue the panel's national dialog on senior housing and health issues.

AARP official C. Keith Campbell will detail for the first time the views of the nation's largest pro-seniors organization on the issues before the commission. AARP has more than 34 million members nationally, including 2.6 million in the state of Florida. The commission will then hear from Miami and Dade County leaders and services providers as part of its effort to develop a unified approach to the housing and health care needs of older Americans. The entire session will be open to the public and include an open forum in which concerned citizens can speak directly to the commissioners.

The Seniors Commission was created by an act of Congress to study and report back to the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on the housing and health needs for the next generation of older Americans. The Commission is empowered to offer specific policy and legislative recommendations for enhancing services and increasing affordable housing for this important and growing segment of our society.
