By Executive Order No.13038, President Clinton established the Advisory Committee on Public Interest Obligations of Digital Television Broadcasters. The Committee will study and recommend the public interest responsibilities that should accompany the broadcasters' receipt of digital television licenses. President Clinton appointed Leslie Moonves, President and CEO of CBS Television, and Dr. Norman Ornstein, Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, chairmen of the Advisory Committee. (See the President's weekly radio address to the nation on June 28, 1997.) The Committee's twenty-two members were selected from the broadcasting industry, public interest community, computer industry, academia, and labor community. Vice President Gore formally appointed the Committee and gave introductory remarks at the first Committee meeting on October 22-23, 1997 in Washington, DC. As authorized by Executive Order No. 13081, the Committee will present its report to the Vice President on October 1, 1998. The Committee has held five meetings to date.
