Telemedicine
Milwaukee has developed, with Iron Mountain Veterans Affairs Medical Center,
several major telemedicine initiatives:
Milwaukee VA Medical Center physicians have been reading Iron
Mountain's nuclear medicine studies since January of 1996. Milwaukee
physicians have been given access to Iron Mountain's DHCP system to
ensure ready access to clinical information.
The telepathology system enables pathologists in Milwaukee to read and
make diagnoses from tissue on slides placed on the microscope in Iron
Mountain. The robotic arm of the microscope can be controlled from
either location. The telepathology team from Milwaukee and Iron
Mountain received a "Hammer Award" from the Vice President in March of
1996.
Milwaukee and Iron Mountain are the first VA medical centers to
perform telefluoroscopy. Live video is captured from the Iron Mountain
equipment and transmitted across a T1 communication line to
Milwaukee. Radiologists in Milwaukee observe the procedure as it is
being performed. Diagnosis is made from spot films taken during this
procedure.
