"I am proud of how federal workers are using information technology to put American citizens in immediate touch with their government and its services. Information technology enables us to rethink and reinvent the way government works."

--Vice President Al Gore, March 11, 1999 announcement

Vice President Gore's 1997 report, "Access America: Reengineering Through Information Technology" captured his vision of using information technology to deliver comprehensive government services to Americans and to dramatically increase government productivity. This "government of the 21st century" is emerging now, thanks to the energy and innovative spirit of federal workers in agencies all over government. Leading this transformation are the Government Information Technology Services Board, the Chief Information Officers Council, and the National Partnership for Reinventing Government.

Greg Woods, Chair of the Government Information Technology Services Board, says that technology is the great enabler for changing the way government interacts with citizens. Moving forward on the Access America Action Plan means:

  • Government and its customers and partners can do their business electronically, eliminating mountains of paper, cutting error rates, and driving up productivity.
  • The public and scientific community can make decisions based on the best and most current information that exists.
  • People who have to meet government requirements, like filing taxes, will have a host of electronic choices on how to do it. And, information will be available anytime, anywhere to make things as easy as possible.

Members of the Government Information Technology Services Board serve as "champions" of the goals in the Action Plan and work with federal agencies to make them a reality.
