President
Clinton Announces Portal to Government Services
On June
24, in his first-ever webcast addressed to the Nation, President
Clinton announced that citizens will be able to search all online
resources offered by the federal government from a single web site
called FirstGov.e.
The
Government of the Future, Here Today
The use of information
technology was predominant in an overwhelming majority of the federal
government initiatives named as semifinalists for this year's prestigious
2000 Innovations in American Government Awards program. From search
agents to software downloads, these initiatives are setting the
standard for the new e-government in the making.
Kiosks
Connect Veterans with Services
Veterans
visiting six VA medical facilities can find out about their eligibility
for VA health-care services at a kiosk in a lobby or clinic waiting
room. Touch-screen displays tell them what services they can receive
and, coming soon - with the swipe of an identification card - what
medical appointments they have scheduled. And this is just the beginning.
Save
Hundreds of Dollars Every Year on Your Home Energy Bill
Want
to save on home energy costs? Go to the Home Energy Saver, type
in your zip code, and answer the questions. What kind of heating
system? What kind of appliances do you use? How many occupants?
The web-based software will make recommendations and tell you how
much money you can save. As you put in energy-efficient windows,
beef up your insulation, and throw out your brother-in-law (just
kidding), the site will also keep track your savings.
