Lt. Col. Michael J. Bloomfield is a NASA astronaut who has logged more than 753 hours in space. The three-time Space Shuttle veteran was a crewmember aboard STS-86 Atlantis in 1997, STS-97 Endeavor in 2000, and STS-110 Atlantis in 2002. Qualified as a shuttle pilot, he is currently NASA's chief astronaut instructor, and is a former chief of safety in the Astronaut Office. Before entering training at the Johnson Space Center in 1995, Col. Bloomfield served as test pilot for all models of the F-16 at Edwards Air Force Base, and also served as safety officer and flight commander for the 416th Flight Test Squadron. He holds a BS in engineering mechanics from the U.S. Air Force Academy, an MS in engineering management from Old Dominion, and is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. He was also 1980 Captain of the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcon Football Team. |
