Mark White joined the Agency for International Development (AID) this summer. He brought to the agency a master's degree in public health, a background as a Peace Corps volunteer, and experience in health programs in Africa and the United States--all valuable experience for an agency that assists countries from Rwanda to Russia.
Mark White was one of a new class of interns that was one of the first signs of change in an agency that is reinventing itself. As part of its efforts to reengineer its personnel, procurement, budget, and management systems, AID adopted a work force diversity plan that's already showing results: last year fewer than half of the 25 interns were minorities or women; this year it was 85 percent.
