Rio Grande Valley One Stop Capital Shop
Receives Vice President's Hammer Award
The Rio Grande Valley One Stop Capital Shop (OSCS) received Vice President Gore's Hammer award on May 26th during the Fifth Annual White House Community Empowerment Conference at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas.
Aida Alvarez, Administrator of the Small Business Administration (center), presented the award to the OSCS staff (left to right) Alejandra Romo, John Phillips, Candi Roxas, Marco Garza, Hector Landez, Gabriel Chavez, Ramiro Garza, Arturo Gonzalez, and Randy Garcia.
The Hammer Award, administered by the National Partnership for Reinventing Government, is presented to an organization that has made significant contributions in support of reinventing government principles. It recognizes teams of federal employees and their partners whose work resulted in a government that works better and costs less. The RGV One Stop Capital Shop has the U.S. Small Business Administration as its federal partner.
The One Stop Capital Shop is an entity established to help clients create, retain, and grow businesses and jobs within federally designated empowerment zone areas. The free technical and business assistance provided includes business plan development, startup assistance, identification of financing resources, and loan packaging assistance. The assistance is made possible by coordinating business development efforts through entities such as the Small Business Administration, Small Business Development Center, Minority Business Opportunity Committee, microlenders, local banks, and many other partners associated with the communities where they are located.
The Rio Grande Valley Empowerment Zone along with the Small Business Administration and The University of Texas Pan-American funded the RGV One Stop Capital Shop. The main office is located in Edinburg with satellite offices in Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, La Villa, and Sebastian.
The Award is the Vice President's answer to yesterday's government. Fittingly, the award consists of a hammer, a ribbon, and a note from Vice President Gore, all in an aluminum frame. More than 1,250 Hammer Awards have been presented to teams comprised of federal employees, state and local employees, and citizens who are working to build a better government.
The Rio Grande Valley One Stop Capital Shop provides business counseling and training to persons wanting to start a new business and to existing businesses that wish to expand. The center also assists in business plan and SBA loan application preparation. For more information please call the Edinburg main office at 956-316-2610.
