US State & Local Gateway Marks Its First Birthday
January 11, 1999--One year ago this month, 20 federal agencies and seven associations representing state and local government employees launched the US State & Local Gateway. This one-stop website has federal information that state and local government employees need to do their jobs. Users from Alabama to Wyoming think it's great. "WOW," said Marc Overbeck, Workforce Development, Salem, Oregon. "What a great entry point for finding resources and tools, especially best practices."

Taking Winter by Storm
If the weather outside is awful, residents of Seattle, King County, and Washington State can go online to get the chilling details in one place. City, County and State Transportation Departments have teamed up to create "GovLink," a collaborative website that provides dozens of winter weather links to agency response operations and personal preparedness.

"Access with Trust" Is Online
January 5, 1999--A new report, Access With Trust, describes a technology essential to achieving the Access America vision of providing electronic access to government services by 2000. "Public/private key" technology provides important tools for agencies working to replace paper forms, toll-free telephone lines, and mail-in envelopes with totally electronic services. This report was published by the Government Information Technology Services Board, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Federal Public Key Infrastructure Steering Committee. Asthma Management Website May Save Lives Worldwide
Worldwide, approximately 25,000 childhood deaths due to asthma each year are preventable, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. On December 11, 1998--World Asthma Day--the Institute launched the Asthma Management Model System. This interactive web-based system is for physicians. They can quickly formulate research questions and access key databases, retrieve the latest treatment guidelines and published literature, obtain continuing education credits, and participate in online forums and discussions.
