Msgr. Gugino (r.) and HUD Assistant Secretary Roy Bernardi at Syracuse, NY Field Hearing, July 30, 2001.

Washington, D.C. The Reverend Monsignor Henry Gugino passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at the age of 59 after battling illness for several months. Representative John LaFalce (D-NY) appointed Monsignor Gugino to the Commission in January of 2001.

Monsignor Gugino was the diocesan director of Catholic Charities of Buffalo. Installed as director in 1995, Monsignor Gugino served as associate director for nearly 20 years. He oversaw the agency's social services delivery system and annual fund raising appeal throughout the eight counties of Western New York. He was a past national chairman of the Catholic Charities Directors Association; and served as chair of the New York State Catholic Charities Directors' Council, and diocesan representative to the New York State Catholic Hospital Council. He served on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County; and the Membership Board of Baker Victory Services and the Diocesan Counseling Center. As President of Delta Development Company, he was responsible for several not-for-profit housing developments throughout Western New York. Monsignor Gugino also worked as a parish priest for seven years prior to joining Catholic Charities.

Always a man of good cheer and a true friend to everyone he met, the Commissioners and staff will sorely miss "Henry." Our hearts are heavy as we go forward in our work.

Memorials may be made to The Gugino Family Fund, C/O Catholic Charities, 525 Washington Street, Buffalo, NY. 14203.
