The Academy of European Law will be organizing the following conference:
Tobacco Regulation in the European Community
Friday and Saturday, 18 and 19 May 2001

with the support of the european respiratory society (ERS) and the european commission
The regulation of Tobacco-related activities is nowadays highly controversial in
Europe. This colloquium will approach the following questions:
- Tobacco and the Internal Market (following ECJ case C-376/98 and C-74/99 on
the tobacco advertising and sponsorship Directive of 1998)
- Manufacturing and Selling Tobacco (The Proposal for a Directive on the
manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco products);
- Tobacco Labelling (Council Directives 89/622/EC and 92/41/EEC concerning the
labelling of tobacco products)
- Tobacco Advertising (following ECJ case C-376/98 and C-74/99 on the tobacco
advertising and sponsorship Directive of 1998)
- Tobacco Sponsorship and Competition (following ECJ case C-376/98 and C-74/99
on the tobacco advertising and sponsorship Directive of 1998)
- Tobacco and Television Broadcasting Activities (Council Directives 89/552/EEC
and 97/36/EC on the pursuit of television broadcasting activities)
- Banning Smoking in Public Areas (The Commission Report on the Resolution of
the Council on banning smoking in places open to the public)
- Tobacco Industry Liability Issues: should we follow the American Example? The
proposed WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
We would welcome it very much if you could participate in this event.
