(WASHINGTON, DC) -- The appointment of Dr. Allan I. Mendelowitz as Executive Director of the Trade Deficit Review Commission was announced today by Dr. Murray Weidenbaum, Commission Chairman. Dr. Mendelowitz will direct the staff of the Commission and assist the members in preparing the Commission's report on the causes and consequences of the trade deficit.
Dr. Weidenbaum said, "Allan brings to the Commission an extensive background in international trade matters. He's a vital addition to the Commission staff. The Commission looks forward to his leadership and is delighted to have him aboard."
Dr. Mendelowitz currently serves as the Vice President of the Economic Strategy Institute. Previously, he served as the Executive Vice President of the U.S. Export-Import Bank (1966-1998). Earlier, he was the Managing Director for International Trade and Finance at the U.S. General Accounting Office (1981-1995). In 1980, Dr. Mendelowitz was the Representative of the Comptroller General on the Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Board. He also has been a Brookings Institute Economic Policy Fellow and served on the faculty of the Economics Department at Rutgers University.
He has been a frequent expert witness before committees of the U.S. Congress on international trade, finance, and competitiveness issues. He also has lectured before audiences around the world, and has published articles in such scholarly journals as: The Journal of Policy Analysis and Management; The Journal of Business; and The National Tax Journal. He holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Economics from Northwestern University and a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University. Allan and his wife Shereen have been married for 32 years and have two children.
