Dr. Alice
Alldredge
Professor, Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology,
Biological Sciences University of California
Dr. Alldredge is a biological oceanographer whose interests
encompass marine plankton ecology, carbon cycling, microbial ecology,
and especially the role of large visible particles, known as marine
snow, in the ecology of the ocean. Marine snow rains down upon the
ocean bottom and is an important source of food for the deep sea as
well as being central in oceanic carbon and nutrient cycling. Research
is conducted at sea, aboard research ships, small boats, and in a
laboratory on the Santa Barbara campus. Her experience is particularly
valuable given the extensive marine facilities.
