PRESS RELEASE
Donald C. Smaltz, Independent Counsel In re Espy, announced
today that Robert W. Ray has been named
Deputy Independent Counsel. Mr. Ray succeeds former Deputy Independent Counsel Theodore S.
Greenberg, who returned on October 5, 1998 to the Department of Justice as Special Counsel
for International Money Laundering, ending his 37-month detail to this office.
Mr. Ray, an Assistant United States Attorney from the Southern District
of New York, Organized and Violent Crime Unit, was detailed by United States Attorney Mary
Jo White to the Office of Independent Counsel in September of 1995. He served as Chief
Associate Independent Counsel and, most recently, as Counsellor to the Independent
Counsel. Mr. Ray, an honors graduate of both Princeton University (1982), and Washington
and Lee University School of Law (1985), served as a law clerk to the late Frank X.
Altimari, Second Circuit Judge. He began his career as a federal prosecutor in February,
1989, when he was hired by then-United States Attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani of the Southern
District of New York.
Independent Counsel Smaltz stated:
Mr. Ray's prosecutorial trial expertise, and his intimate familiarity
with Department of Justice policies and procedures, are ideal qualifications for the
Deputy position. Since his original detail to this office in September 1995, he
distinguished himself in a variety of key positions in the investigations and trials
conducted by this office. He is currently serving as co-trial counsel in the ongoing case
of United States v. Alphonso Michael Espy, which began October 1, 1998. I have
relied on Mr. Ray's professional talents and personal counsel since he first joined this
office, and am delighted to now have him as my Deputy. |
