About Accountability for Results: SafeCities partners and other innovative communities are committed to being accountable for how well they are doing on a variety of measures. Some use these measures primarily for management. Others have involved the public and developed scorecards on their youth's well-being; they publish information on the their status via the World Wide Web, in newspapers and in other forms. Key examples and resources follow.

Accountability in an Age of Devolution, By Con Hogan

The purpose of this paper is to outline a new paradigm for improving social well-being. The fundamental thesis is that organizing at the community level around broad outcomes and more specific indicators of social well-being will result in improved conditions. This is both driven and assisted by the understanding that the role of both the federal and state governments in improving social well-being is devolving to communities and regions, and that traditional approaches by federal and state governments of imposed structure and process to achieve improved conditions is not effective at the community level. Communities are uniquely able to expand the number of kinds of people and organizations to improve outcomes.

Baltimore City Data Collaborative

Building on previous data efforts, the Baltimore City Data Collaborative was established in May, 1998 to provide data, analysis, and evaluation support for the activities of the Family League of Baltimore City and the Baltimore Safe & Sound Campaign, as well as to serve as a resource for the city as a whole.

Florida Department of Education: Florida School Indicators Report

The Florida School Indicators Report is designed as a ready-reference guide providing data on every school for each of Florida’s 67 school districts. The report allows quick comparisons between schools and districts using a single source. Figures are compiled from the Department of Education’s automated student, staff, and finance databases using data reported by the school districts.

Fort Worth Police Department

Fort Worth posts current crime statistics and shares crime tips with its citizens.

Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse

The Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse was established in March 1996 by the Information Technology Policy Council of Georgia and implemented by the University System of Georgia, with funding provided by the State of Georgia. The purpose of the Clearinghouse is to collect, document, format, and publish GIS information collected by multiple agencies of Georgia state government.

Louisville Police Department Citizen Interaction

The Louisville police department's first district has a growing program to interact with citizens in their community. This proposal outlines the way they solicit citizen input electronically and provide timely local safety information. Louisville is one of our SafeCities Partners.

National Partnership for Reinventing Government

The National Partnership for Reinventing Government is the Clinton-Gore Administration's initiative to reform the way the federal government works. Our mission is to create a government that "works better, costs less, and gets results Americans care about." Begun in the early days of the Administration, with Vice President Al Gore at its helm, our task force is the longest-running reform effort in U.S. history.

Portland State University Child Welfare Partnership

This Interactive Graphing Program contains three categories of Benchmarks data including People, the Economy and Quality of Life.

Vermont Children's Well-Being Online

This Mapping System enables the public to interactively map the key indicators of children's well-being in Vermont by county, school supervisory union, and by school. Much of what is mapped here has been extracted from the Vermont DOE 1998 School Report, and the Vermont AHS 1997-98 Community Profiles. We have also included additional links on the map to county social/economic indicator tables, which have been provided by the UVM Center for Rural Studies (CRS).

Vermont's Outcomes, Indicators and General Compilations of Data

Key outcomes and indicators are reported at the community and county levels by school Supervisory Union. Committed to improving the safety and well-being of Vermont's citizens, especially its children, these publications provide support for the collaborations between State government and localized nonprofit organizations that are necessary to deliver needed services in the most effective manner possible. Data is presented at the SU or county level.
