E-ViEWS equips emergency vehicles with transponders that communicate via microwave with receivers on large visual displays erected above the centers of intersections. As the train or emergency vehicle approaches the intersection, signal lights turn yellow, then red, for cross-traffic. Approaching drivers also see flashing vehicle symbols on the visual displays, in addition to the usual sirens and whistles.

These active displays, linked to the receivers, inform drivers of the direction from which the emergency traffic is approaching or departing the intersection. And, they get drivers' attention because the vehicle symbols appear to move across the displays, synchronized with the actual emergency vehicle's or train's movements.

Partners for Life

Through the JPL Technology Affiliates Program, large and small businesses work with NASA engineers to solve problems right here on Earth. Jim Davidson's company needed help in solving the hazard of emergency vehicles, so they partnered with specialized JPL engineers to resolve engineering design issues.

Together, they designed E-ViEWS' customized transponders and design to blend with existing city communications infrastructures. E-ViEWS is now being refined further so that demonstration models can be installed in large metropolitan areas.

The JPL Technology Affiliates Program brings the benefits of the U.S. space program to people on Earth through partnerships with American industry.
