The mission of the department has evolved from fostering and promoting foreign and domestic commerce to leading the Nation's economic and technological advancement. Commerce helps to expand economic opportunity and create jobs by fulfilling its mission in the following crosscutting areas:

Secretary Brown is committed to providing economic opportunities for all Americans as we approach the 21st century, focusing on the need to redress the long-term structural failings that imperil the ability of Americans to enjoy economic opportunity and a rising standard of living.

Commerce, with its 35,754 employees and $4.2 billion budget (FY95), is fully committed to cutting expenses and improving the quality of services we provide.
