Henry T. Harbin, M.D.
Biography
As chairman of the board of Magellan Health Services, Dr. Harbin leads the nation's largest behavioral health managed care company, serving nearly 70 million people nationwide. He joined the organization in 1995 as executive vice president, before becoming president and CEO of Magellan Health Services in 1998. Dr. Harbin assumed his current role in October of 2001.
Prior to joining Magellan's executive team, Dr. Harbin had been chief executive officer of Green Spring since 1994. Under his leadership, Green Spring grew to be one of the largest managed behavioral healthcare companies in the country, with annual revenues of over $400 million and 22 million members. Dr. Harbin co-founded Green Spring in 1989, and served as chief clinical officer and chief operating officer responsible for all operational and financial functions.
Before joining Green Spring, Dr. Harbin held positions at the State of Maryland as director and regional director of the state mental health administration from 1978-1988. At that time, the state mental health authority had an operating budget of approximately $300 million, employed more than 9,000 employees, operated 14 inpatient facilities and provided a range of community mental health services to more than 50,000 mentally ill citizens.
Dr. Harbin is a founder and past chairman of the American Managed Behavioral Healthcare Association (AMBHA), the industry's leading trade association. In 1995, he was named the Health Care/Life Sciences Entrepreneur of the Year for the greater Washington, D.C. area. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, University of Maryland School of Medicine and earned an M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in 1972. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Virginia in 1968. He is married and has two children.
