PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES SAM KATHRYN CAMPANA AS MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL DROUGHT POLICY COMMISSION

The President today announced his intent to appoint Sam Kathryn Campana to serve as Member of the National Drought Policy Commission.

Ms. Sam Kathryn Campana, of Scottsdale, Arizona, has been the Mayor of Scottsdale since her election in 1996. Ms. Campana previously was a Scottsdale City Council member from 1986 to 1994. Ms. Campana is an experienced leader in the Arizona arts community. In 1975, she was a founding member of the Scottsdale Arts Center Association, later serving as the organization's first woman president. In 1983, Ms. Campana became the Executive Director of Arizonans for Cultural Development, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that serves as the state's arts advocacy voice. She recently left that role and now serves as chairman-emeritus of the organization. In 1992, she was a fellow with the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Campana graduated with honors from Scottsdale Community College, and attended Arizona State University and Carroll College in Montana.

The National Drought Policy Act of 1998 establishes the National Drought Policy Commission (NDPC) to provide advice and recommendations on the creation of an integrated, coordinated Federal policy designed to prepare and respond to serious drought emergencies. The NDPC is also to conduct a thorough study and submit a report to the President and Congress on national drought policy.
