WOMEN’S GROUP MEETS WITH BREMER
Role of Women, Security and Economy Discussed
Baghdad – A group of women leaders met with Ambassador L. Paul
Bremer on Friday morning to discuss security, the economy and the role of Iraqi
women in the political process. During the meeting, Bremer advised the nine
members of the Advisory Committee on Women’s Affairs (ACWA) to share their
concerns about elections and the future of women with United Nations
Representative Lakhdar Brahimi.
“We were here to express our feelings about the current situation and the future
of women in the interim government of Iraq, and also to assess the women’s
situation and other matters in the last year,” said attendee and Deputy Minister
of Culture Maysoon al-Damluji.
ACWA was formed in December 2003 as the political arm of the Higher Council of
Women. The group’s mission is to mobilize women to take an active role in the
emerging democratic structures embodied in the November 15th Agreement
(Transitional Administrative Law, Transitional National Assembly). ACWA is
headed by Municipalities and Public Works Minister Nesreen Berwari.
