DEMOCRACY CENTER CONDUCTS ELECTIONS

Hilla, Babil Province, Iraq. The Democracy Center in Babil Province recently held democratic elections. Those elected will hold leadership positions within the Center and will represent the Center at the Regional Democracy Center.

Sheikhs and community leaders in Babil Province use the Democracy Center as a place to discuss relevant issues and to learn about democracy. They are participating in a free, democratic Iraq and represent tribes throughout Babil Province.

Some of those democratically elected at the Democracy Center will represent the Center at the Regional Democracy Center. More than 3,000 people attended the opening of the Regional Democracy Center on March 8, 2004. The Regional Democracy Center, which represents the cornerstone of democracy for south central Iraq, includes sheikhs, tribal leaders, community leaders, farmers, men, women, widows, and students. These groups work together at the Regional Democracy Center to learn about democracy and to promote democratic principles throughout south central Iraq, an area that includes 12 million people and is approximately half the size of Iraq.

Learning about freedom and responsibility are essential as Iraqis participate in a free Iraq. The Democracy Center elections show Iraqis determined to move toward a sovereign and democratic Iraq.
