The
Amtrak Reform Council (the Council), an independent oversight
commission established by Congress, will hold a Business
Meeting on Monday, January 24, 2000, to discuss the work
program and meeting schedule for calendar year 2000 as well
as elect the officers for the Council. Following the business
meeting, the Council will hold a press conference to release
its Annual Report, to brief the public on its contents,
and answer questions.
The
Business Meeting and Press Conference will be held in the
Bunker Hill Room at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill at 400
New Jersey, NW, Washington D.C. The Business Meeting will
begin at 9:00 a.m. and adjourn at 11:00 a.m. and the Press
Conference will begin promptly at 11 a.m. and adjourn at
12noon.
According to Council Chairman Gil Carmichael, "The
Council's first annual report is not intended to reach conclusions
or make recommendations about Amtrak's long-term future,
but to provide a picture of the Amtrak organization as it
exists today, as well as a perspective on Amtrak's performance
to this juncture. Against this backdrop, the report raises
questions, concerns, and issues that the Council believes
should be addressed in its future efforts and, ultimately,
by Congress."
The
Amtrak Reform Council is an independent Federal oversight
commission established under the provisions of the Amtrak
Reform and Accountability Act of 1997 (P. L. 105-134) to
recommend improvements in Amtrak's operations and to monitor
its financial performance.
The
agenda for the business meeting will not be finalized until
Thursday, January 20th, please contact the ARC office at
(202) 366-0591 after this date.
The
Annual Report will not be available until Monday, January
24th. At that time, it will be available either on the Council's
website (www.amtrakreformcouncil.com) or by contacting the
ARC office.
