The first thirteen appointees to the Commission took the oath of Office during a morning ceremony at the White House on July 13, 2000. The ceremony was presided over by then Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna Shalala, and attended by the Commissioners, their family members, Senators Tom Harkin and Barbara Mikulski whose leadership led to the formation of the Commission, members of the White House and Department staff, and members of the Commission staff.
