Comment: I am quite astonished to read today that the results of this crucial investigation and reform will be more complicated rules like caps on mortage interest and insurance, and more rules for charitable contributions! I am currently a masters student pursuing a degree in professional accounting and specializing in tax. As this is my future career and I learn more about the tax code, I am continually amazed at the needless complexity of our IRC. If so many states can use a sales tax instead of an income tax I don't see how it is so impossible for the federal government to do the same. With select items not taxed and given refunds to the lower income brackets all arguments about a national sales tax being regressive are refuted. Additional tax received from the large underground economy will be picked up in the retail arena and tax evasion will be decrease not increase. I am convinced that a national sales tax is feasible and in the end will bring in more revenue than the current system. Yes, it will take some effort to work out the kinks and gradually phase in changes, but it can be done and done well. The current system needs radical reform, not more of the same! As a Republican and as many of you are, and afterall appointed by the President himself, one would think that you might favor less government and more individual freedom, both of which would result from a simplied system. I refer you to Daryl Hitchings comment if you are looking for a place to buy the Fair Tax book - it shouldn't be too hard to find.
