Subject: S25, HR25 Consumption Tas Comment: Before you make any firm recommendations for change, please review the study revealing the truly dire effects a switch to a consumption tax would have on the poor and the middle class. (See the web site of Citizens for Tax Justice, www.ctj.org). Such a move would pretty much complete the transfer of the entire tax burden from the haves to the have-nots and the have-a-little-bits. Add this to the recent attacks upon the social safety net and we will have achieved a two-tier society. The few will be safe from uncertainty, the many will never be able to escape it. (Do not be fooled by the bills' titles. "Tax Fairness" is the last thing these bills would provide.) Thank you. |
