Comment: Re: FairTax

This issue is more important to me than is the Social Security reform (and that is 2nd most important).

Recently, I heard over 60% of all taxpayers (individual, I assumed) cheat, that the Fed Govt loses out on $billions. With the national consumption tax, cheating would be made impossible – except for crooks who steal the things that would be taxed. The only entities that could swindle the FG would be merchants – this would not even be the big corporations who today pass all taxes down to the consumer, anyway. And merchants would not be in business long if they failed to pay the tax collected.

The argument that it would have to be more than 23% is really uninformed. I believe it could be even lower. Why? See my comment above about $billions being “cheated” from the FG – by eliminating cheating, those lost $billions would be collected.

The argument that the FairTax will cause depression is also uninformed. Yes, we “middle class” might curtail our spending so we can keep more of what we earn, but that money would then be either invested or saved or hidden in the walls of people’s homes. The investing would create a stronger economy. And this class will never start saying “no” to their spoiled children; they will still get all they want. Additionally, the “wealthy” will never change their spending habits. They will still throw big weddings and parties, buy their yachts, build their pretentious homes, continue their expensive dining out, decorating over and over and over…etc. See where I am going?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE eliminate the IRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A national consumption tax (sales tax, FairTax, whatever you want to call it) is THE ONLY FAIR WAY to get the money to support the pork-filled federal government. The flat tax is regressive. The FairTax is the only EFFICIENT way of collecting tax.
