Subject: Fair Tax--National Sales Tax

Comment: Dear President Bush and Tax Reform Panel,

I want you to know that I support the Fair Tax, or the National Sales Tax. I believe this is the most equitable and fair way to tax the citizens of the United States for a few reasons.
First, since you are only taxed on what you spend, every one gets to keep all of the money that he earns. He chooses what goods and services he will buy and therefore chooses how much he will be taxed. Everyone should have a right to the money he earns without certain amounts being forcibly taken from him.
Second, this tax is fair for the poor, who along with those who speak out for them often complain about having to pay too much or that the rich need to pay their "fair share." A "poor man" will get to keep his whole pay check and will not have to be taxed on anything more than the necessities he needs unless he chooses himself to buy extras. In this case, whatever tax he pays will be up to whatever he chooses to buy. And, before he buys, he can take this into consideration, so he has knowledge on the front to make his own decisions. It educates him and gives him more control over his income.
Third, it is fair for the more prosperous and the rich, because they are not penalized for being successful. I think it is a shame to put down the rich, most of whom have worked hard to succeed. When they are taxed more heavily than anyone else, it is tantamount to penalizing them for taking initiative and succeeding.
Fourth, because of the unfair and heavy taxes on the wealthy and on big businesses and corporations, wealthy business owners and corporate executives often go overseas for production and labor to avoid taxes here. I think taking away these taxes would encourage them to move back to the United States, and could create more jobs for U.S. citizens, including those who say there are too few jobs and those who say that they are poor because they cannot get a job (or at least a good one). This would also put more money into our economy. Less Taxes on corporations, large private businesses, and the heads and executives of these would also, I believe, enable the businesses to make more profit, and therefore could possibly give them more money to pay their workers. I am thinking that this could potentially lead to an higher average wage, if the businesses and corporations are so inclined. This would be good for everyone.
Fifth, it gives freedom to people. A person has a right to the money he earn, because he has worked for it. I do not like the idea a person can be taxed and money is taken from him and his family against his will. This is money he has worked for, and some of it can be redistributed to others who did not work for that money he earned. It is wrong to forcibly take the money a man earns and give it to someone else. It is stealing unless the man chooses to give it away and those you redistribute it to are receiving stolen property. The Fair Tax lets a person choose what he will buy, therefore choosing the amount of tax he pays, and that money can be used for what is necessary under more fair and moral circumstances.
Sixth, the Fair Tax if plain and transparent. There is not a huge tax code book that changes from year to year. Most people are not able to keep up with all the changes, and they are not consenting to the changes, because they do not know about them. I think that this transparency could lead to more trust in our government, because its constituents can know what they are doing and it is made clear to them on the front end. They do not have to worry about the government changing tax amounts and code behind their backs while they are busy with their lives. I might trust more if I knew that the government would be up front with me.
Seventh, giving the taxes back on what is taxed on goods for the amount below the poverty line is fairer, because the poor will pay no taxes unless they spend above the poverty level. It is also fair to the more prosperous, because it is saying that the minimum amount needed to survive will not be taxed. It is fair for everyone because it says that each man pays no tax on the amount he would need to live decently. Only those who spend above this are taxed, and they are taxed only on what they choose to buy.
In summary, I think the Fair Tax is fairer for all involved. It does not steal the money from the pockets of those who earn it. It gives freedom to choose what amount you will be taxed. It does not press upon the poor, because they will not pay taxes on what is spent below the poverty level, and what they spend above it will be their choices. It allows corporations and businesses to keep more of the profits they earn without the oppression of a person losing what he has worked for. This can enable the companies to pay higher wages and move factories, plants, etc. back into the United States, which can produce more jobs and/or higher wages. The tax also does not penalize the wealthy for being successful. It educates the citizens and allows them to make more informed choices about how they will manage their income and their lives. It is an open, honest, up-front tax that I believe will lead to increased trust in our government from many of its citizens. It is the right thing to do, because you are letting people keep what they earn, and each man should be allowed to enjoy the fruits of his labor. If not, what satifaction is there in using your hands and minds to produce anything?
