Subject: Complicated tax laws

Comment: Current income tax laws are no longer used to obtain revenue to run the government. They are a way for politicians to pay back campaign contributors, induce businesses and individuals to act as desired by politicians, and provide guaranteed lifetime jobs for "tax professionals". The laws are unfair, seen as unfair, and as such, make people disrespect laws which they cannot fully understand and obey. We need one single, simple tax such as a national sales tax.
A combined income and sales tax is a very bad idea, because it will just allow future tinkering by politicians, becoming just as complicated as today. A value added tax is hidden, allowing politicians to play favorites just like today. Any new tax must be fully visible, so that people cann see it in action and trust that everyone is paying the same.
A national sales tax will preserve the current tax status for mortgage interest, charities, and state income taxes. If these items are not purchases (which they are not), then there is no tax penalty for this money -just like today.
A national sales tax should be progressive, not regressive, so I favor a way to allow people with lower incomes to pay lower taxes, such as a rebate method. I have heard people call this too complicated, but NOTHING can be more complex than what we have today. Whatever you do, please do not keep the income tax and the uneven political playing filed that comes with it. My taxes should not be a favor politicians can trade. Everyone should pay.
