Donald C. Smaltz, Independent Counsel, today made the following statement:
My discussions with the TIME reporter Friday, December 16, occurred solely because he
had obtained and provided me with a copy of an extremely confidential internal
investigation document generated by our office. My concern for the integrity of our
investigation, in my judgment, required me to speak with the reporter.
We are still in the initial stages of our investigation. We are following our mandate
to conduct a comprehensive and objective investigation of the evidence we uncover. It is
far too early for any conclusions or inferences to be made as to our office's evaluation
of any of the statements reported by TIME magazine.
