Careers and Business

www.ajb.dni.us - Point and click your way to your dream job at America's Job Bank on the Department of Labor's Internet site. America's Job Bank features on-line resumes posted by more than 1.6 million job seekers and job listings posted by nearly 1.5 million employers.

www.usajobs.opm.gov/b1a.htm - Troll for a Federal job in this current list of government job openings. You can narrow your search by criteria such as job title, geographic location, or salary.

www.sba.gov - Start your own business with help from the Small Business Administration. This site offers everything from the scoop on loans to discussions of outreach initiatives for women and minority-owned businesses. The site also provides e-mail counseling and mentoring, on-line education courses, and a database of Federal, state, and private contracts available to small firms.

www.business.gov - Get on-line help on loans, e-mail counseling and mentoring, information about government contracts, and an opportunity to electronically present your business plan to potential investors.

www.sec.gov/edgarhp.htm - Search the Security and Exchange Commission's database for any public company's SEC filings.

www.uspto.gov/tmdb - Do a trademark search if you are considering developing or naming a new product. If the product name you want isn't taken, you can register your trademark on the spot. Just fill out the on-line registration form and pay the fee.

factfinder.census.gov - If you're starting a new business, or expanding into a new market, check out the Census Bureau's American "FactFinder" for demographic information. Choose the town or city you're interested in, and create a report from such data profiles as "General Population," "Housing Characteristics," and "Income and Poverty Status." The report defines communities via statistics on home ownership and rentals, educational levels, and languages spoken at home. To find out if there's room for your new business, or if a market's already saturated, analyze additional census data at tier2.census.gov/cbp/cbp_sts.htm.
