OSHA NAMED FINALIST FOR INNOVATIONS IN AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AWARD

OSHA's Expert Advisor software program was named a finalist in the prestigious Innovations in American Government Award, which recognize responsive and innovative government programs.

"OSHA has created a practical compliance tool for businesses and workers, and these advisors provide expert assistance and tailor-made guidance in applying OSHA requirements to specific workplaces," said Charles N. Jeffress, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. "Receiving recognition from such a prestigious program validates our hard work and creative efforts on behalf of all American workers and employers."

The advisors are a series of interactive software programs that make understanding OSHA's regulations easier, especially for those with little background in job safety. They enable businesses to answer a few simple questions and receive reliable answers on how regulations apply to their unique workplace. The advisors are available at no cost, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on OSHA's website at www.osha.gov.

OSHA is one of 25 finalists selected from more than 1,300 applications submitted by cabinet members, governors, mayors, and county executives. Finalist programs receive a $20,000 grant. OSHA will use the funds to expand awareness of the advisors. Ten winners will be announced in October, and each will receive an award of $100,000 to help replicate their programs.

The Innovations in American Government Awards Program is recognized as one of the most prestigious public service awards programs in the country. Started in 1986, the Innovations Program is sponsored by the Ford Foundation, and administered by Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government in partnership with The Council for Excellence in Government.
