N G I S C Chicago Meeting, May 20, 1998

MS. CHERI O'NIONES

CHAIRMAN JAMES: Cheri O'Niones.

MS. O'NIONES: Good afternoon. My name is Cheri O'Niones. I'm an employee of Majestic Star casino in Gary. I work in the food and beverage department and I'm a member of HERE and proud of both accomplishments. I worked construction for over ten years and probably collected unemployment for at least two years. I had to travel far from my son and my home to work. When work was good, it was great. When there wasn't work, it was a struggle.

I have been working at the Majestic Star since day one. I have excellent insurance for my son and I and I know exactly what my schedule will be. Working conditions are favorable to everybody in my department and we make a competitive wage. We have to thank our union for all our bonuses.

I've seen a great improvement in the city in which I live and work, Gary, Indiana. We have seen major clean ups in all aspects of living there. We have more law enforcement and code enforcers now than we have ever had in the past. The casinos have created more jobs for residents of all ages and races than I've ever seen before. The casinos have created a chance for a better life and future for thousands of people. It has been an economic boost for everybody. Thank you.

CHAIRMAN JAMES: Thank you.
