NATIONAL DROUGHT POLICY COMMISSION TO MEET IN WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON, April 11, 2000--The National Drought Policy Commission today announced that it will hold its next meeting on April 19, 2000, and April 20 if necessary, in Washington, DC. The Commission will review public comments submitted in response to its draft report, as well as discuss and approve the content of the Executive Summary and final report.

The meeting will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 19th, and April 20, 2000, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., if necessary to complete its work. The meeting will be held in the Jamie L. Whitten Federal Building, room 221-A, 12th and Jefferson Drive, SW, Washington, D.C. All times are Eastern Daylight Time.

The purpose of the Commission is to provide advice and recommendations to the President and Congress on the creation of an integrated, coordinated Federal policy, designed to prepare for and respond to serious drought emergencies. Tasks for the Commission include developing recommendations that will (a) better integrate Federal laws and programs with ongoing State, local, and tribal programs, (b) improve public awareness of the need for drought mitigation, prevention, and response and (c) determine whether all Federal drought preparation and response programs should be consolidated under one existing Federal agency, and, if so, identify the agency.
