Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security - Nomination P004807 Nominating: Thomas Wadlow, c/o Pilot Network Services, Inc., 1080 Marina Village Parkway, Alameda, CA 94501

Dear Mr. Secretary:

I would like to nominate Thomas Wadlow for the Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security. Thomas Wadlow is an expert in computer security and network design and the Vice President of Security Research and Development at Pilot Network Services, Inc., a secure network service provider based near San Francisco, Calif. One of the original founders of Pilot in 1993, Tom has performed dozens of network and firewall audits of Fortune 1000 companies and is responsible for maintaining Pilot's secure infrastructure which protects hundreds of company websites and networks against unauthorized access - companies including American Stock Exchange, 20th Century Fox, Brodia, The Good Guys, E-Stamp, and General Electric.

Tom's expertise in Internet security is matched by his ability to translate complex issues into laymans' terms. Audiences at his speeches, such as those at Internet World and Wall St. Technology Assoc., consistently give him high marks for high marks for delivery and content value. Most recently, he has spoken at Wall St. Technology Assoc., Networld + Interop, USENIX Security Conference, Web Developer, and MIS Training Institute: Avoiding the Crisis in Healthcare Information Security

Based on his extensive experience in Internet security, Tom would be a strong technical asset to help quantify levels of "adequate security" for implementation of certain fair information practices for consumers, as well as lend additional technical expertise in determining exactly what information today's websites are garnering from consumers. In addition, Tom has experience with enforcement against unauthorized access.

Prior to Pilot, Tom was a senior research network architect at Sun Microsystems Laboratories. At Sun he designed and implemented network architectures, including next-generation ATM-networks, and created and managed the Research Systems and Network Architecture Group. In his 20 years of experience, Mr. Wadlow has held senior technical staff and management positions with Xerox PARC, Schlumberger, Lawrence Livermore Laboratories and ParcPlace Systems, Inc. He holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering and mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University and is the author of numerous trade journal articles and a book.

Tom will be able to attend all meetings of the advisory board and understands that transportation costs from San Francisco will not be reimbursed.

Best regards.
