"Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security – Nomination, P004807"

Dear Mr. Secretary:

On behalf of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), I am writing to express my interest in serving as a member of the Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security.

ANA is the advertising industry’s oldest trade association and our membership is a cross-section of American industry, consisting of manufacturers, retailers and service providers. Representing more than 7,500 separate advertising entities, our member companies market a wide array of products and services to consumers and other businesses. Many ANA members are actively engaged in e-commerce.

ANA has been very active in the online privacy arena. Working with our sister association, the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), we established the CASIE privacy goals in 1995. We played an active role in the development of the new online marketing guidelines of the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU). We worked closely with the Commission and members of Congress to develop the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We were a founding member of the Online Privacy Alliance (OPA) and have worked to encourage all online businesses to adopt and post meaningful privacy policies.

We commend the Commission for creating this Advisory Committee and for restating the goal of encouraging effective self-regulation as the preferred approach to protecting consumer privacy online. Providing access and security for information collected online raises a number of important policy and technical issues for marketers.

In addition, one of our member companies, Procter & Gamble, is interested in having someone from their company serve as a member of the Advisory Committee. The specific individual may not be identified by the January 5th deadline, due to holiday schedules, but the company is committed to providing someone with technical expertise in this area.

We believe that ANA and a representative from Procter & Gamble can make a positive contribution to the deliberations of this Advisory Committee and would appreciate the opportunity to serve on it.

Thank you for your consideration and please contact me at (202) 626-7800 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Daniel L. Jaffe
Executive Vice President
