Subject: Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security -- Nomination, P004807

I would like to nominate Mr. Simson L. Garfinkel to be a member of the Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security. Mr. Garfinkel is a journalist, technologist, and recognized computer security expert. His new book, Database Nation: The Death of Privacy in the 21st Century, will be published in January. This book has already received rave reviews from privacy experts and consumer advocates.

Mr. Garfinkel would bring to this committee a solid understanding of both technical issues and privacy implications. In 1997 Mr. Garfinkel's coverage of the U.S. Social Security Administration's web site showed how lax security and poor privacy protections was endangering the financial privacy of all tax-paying Americans. The coverage sparked a  Congressional inquiry; the site was shut down and redesigned as a result.

Mr. Garfinkel is a founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sandstorm Enterprises, Inc., the company that commercialized the computer hacker's "war dialer." He is also founder and President of Vineyard.NET, Inc., an Internet service provider with 1300 customers in Marthas Vineyard. He is a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.

Mr. Garfinkel's resume is available online at http://simson.net/resume/. He can be reached via email at simsong@vineyard.net or by telephone at 617-876-6111.
